“When we came here, we came for my husband’s work. He got a job here with Suncor. And for us it was a huge opportunity because we were struggling so much in Vancouver. We had a house we really couldn’t afford, we had cars that were falling apart and you know there was one point when we both lost our jobs within a space of a year and we had a house to pay for. It was hugely stressful and so we were looking for alternatives and he saw this ad in the paper from Suncor: work in Fort McMurray.”

“We live here, we’ve invested here and we resent these people who get a living out allowance. I think some get something ridiculous like $200 a week for living out.  Because they’ve been hired away from Edmonton and Calgary or whatever and to get them as an incentive to come up, they say ok we’ll give you this living out allowance.”
